Seven Mistakes You Should Avoid In Your SEO Strategy

Here are seven mistakes you should avoid in developing your SEO strategy:

1. Using the Wrong Keywords

Customers find products by typing questions or queries into search engines. If your keywords don’t answer the questions that customers will be asking, then you need a new SEO strategy. You should take advantage of free tools for keyword research such as Google Keyword Tool, SEOmoz Term Extractor and Alexa for up-to-date accurate keyword trends.

2. Disregarding the Title Tag

A title tag is essential in defining the content for a particular page. Without it, search engines and customers will disregard your website. Your title tag needs to contain your targeted keywords or phrases whilst still explaining to humans and search engines exactly what the page is about. Your content needs to reflect what the title is saying.

3. Lack of Consistency and Maintenance

Imagine a model who didn’t take care of herself for an entire year. No makeup, no showers, no change of clothes. Would anyone pay attention? The same is true for a website without proper updates and maintenance; search engines will ignore them as well. Search engines want to see fresh content all of the time ensuring that websites are providing the best information to its users. A blog is an easy way to keep content fresh and these are timestamped to help let people know when web pages are last updated.

4. Only Having Images for Headings

A picture is worth a thousand words, unless it’s being indexed by a search engine. Images don’t convey enough information for search engines to properly index your site. ‘Readable’ text is mush more important for search engines. If you need to use an image for some reason ensure that all images have the ‘alt’ and ‘title’ attribute which will help describe what the image is saying.

e.g <img src=”images/logo.png” alt=”NeonLobster Design” title=”Web Design Company” />

5. Ignoring URLs

Proper page name structure, especially the URL name, plays a principal part in attracting organic keywords to your website. So if a page is optimised for Car Servicing Oxfordshire surely it makes sense to have the HTML page name as “car-servicing-0xfordshire.html” or similar.

6. Lack of Keyword Specific Content

Online content is king. It’s essential to have pages that use the right keywords to describe your product or services. We often recommend to website owners to install a blog platform to make it easy to write keyword targeted pages. We use the WordPress platform for our blog and also use this on many client websites.

7. Paying for Search Terms You Could Have for Free

Why pay for something you could have gotten for free? Don’t utilise pay-per-click terms if you could have received the same traffic for free using organic SEO.
